All our houses are within walking distance of Exeter campuses and the city centre.
FAQs about student houses in Exeter
It depends on which campus you’re at and what kind of place you want. Most students rent within walking distance of the city centre and the university.
St James and Pennsylvania sit between Streatham Campus and the city centre, and include some of Exeter’s most popular student roads. Gingerbread Homes has nine houses here, including four on Danes Road (2, 32, 34 and 37 Danes Road, with six or seven bedrooms), 20 and 59 Victoria Street, 27 Pennsylvania Road, 76 Howell Road and Eldon Villa at 1 Old Park Road, just off Longbrook Street.
Mount Pleasant is very slightly further way but still within a 10 – 15 min walk of the main campus and the city centre. Our houses here are 31 and 33 Monks Road, 1 King’s Road and 41 St John’s Road, all with six bedrooms.
Heavitree is ideal if you’re studying at St Luke’s Campus. We have 12 and 22 Homefield Road and 92 Magdalen Road, with six or seven bedrooms. An ideal location for the hospital and city centre, with plenty of shops and cafes and bars a stone’s throw away.
Every Gingerbread Homes house is within walking distance of the university campuses and the city centre.
Look for a local landlord who responds quickly when something goes wrong, is upfront about what’s included in the rent, shares what previous tenants have said about their student houses, and shows you safety certificates such as the Gas Safety Record and Electrical Installation Condition Report before you sign. A long track record in the city is a good sign too.
Gingerbread Homes has been letting student houses in Exeter since 1995. Our local property manager, Alison, knows all our houses and responds quickly to messages in the WhatsApp group we set up with each household so issues can be reported and fixed. We don’t charge a security deposit, publish safety certificates with every property listing, and share the comments made by previous tenants in our end of year survey.
Rent is the biggest cost, so what’s included in it makes a big difference. Check whether bills are covered, whether you’ll need to pay a deposit upfront, and how far you’ll be from campus, as living within walking distance saves on bus fares. Sharing a house with friends usually works out better value than purpose-built student accommodation, and gives you more space. Gingerbread Homes doesn’t charge a security deposit, and our houses come with bills included as standard, including Wi-Fi, water, gas, electricity and the TV licence.
